What Is Protein?
You may have noticed that here at Twisted Dough, we’re focused on two things: yumminess and protein. The importance of a delicious product is a given, but let’s talk about why we care so much about our protein!
First of all, let’s cover the basics. So, what the heck is protein, and why do we need it?
Protein is an essential macronutrient that plays a crucial role in the functioning and overall health of your body. Large molecules made up of amino acids, proteins are often referred to as the building blocks of life. These amino acids are essential in building and repairing tissues, supporting immune function, and acting as enzymes and hormones. Here are a few specific functions that proteins are responsible for:
- Building and repairing muscle tissue, as well as maintaining muscle mass, strength, and function.
- Regulating appetite and promoting feelings of fullness.
- Supporting a healthy metabolism, as it requires more energy to digest compared to fats and carbohydrates, leading to increased calorie expenditure.
- Supporting a healthy immune system, as many components, such as antibodies, are made up of proteins,
- Assisting in regulating important hormone functions such as metabolism, growth, and mood.
You might be surprised to know that our body does not produce all of the protein needed to maintain our overall health. Out of twenty different amino acids that make up proteins, nine must be obtained from an outside source. So, how do we get the protein we need?
Protein can be found in a wide variety of sources, both animal and plant. Common high-quality animal sources include meat, poultry, fish, eggs and dairy, such as milk, yogurt and cheese. Plant sources include tofu, tempeh, edamame, nuts, seeds, whole grains like quinoa and barley, and legumes, such as beans, lentils and chickpeas. It is important to note that plant sources may not contain all essential amino acids, however, consuming a variety of plant foods throughout the day can ensure you get all the amino acids your body needs.
By understanding the importance of protein and incorporating it into your diet effectively, you can support your overall health and well-being. With twenty grams of protein in our smallest size of protein dough, and over one hundred grams in our largest size, Twisted Dough aims to be the source of nutrition you need to feel your best.
